ARC Water Safety Instructor Course

Course Description:

This course trains Water Safety Instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants progress. The courses and presentations include Parent and Child Aquatics Levels 1 and 2, Preschool Aquatics Levels 1 – 3, Learn-to-Swim Levels 1 – 6, three adult courses as well as the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses and more. To enroll, instructor candidates must be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Water Safety Instructor candidates must be at least 16 years old
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills (on the first day of class):
    • Swim the following strokes consistent with Level 4:
    • Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke – 25 yards
    • Butterfly – 15 yards
    • Back float for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
    • Tread water for 1 minute

Certification Requirements:

  • Complete the online Orientation to the Swimming & Water Safety Program
  • Complete the online Water Safety Instructor course
  • Attend all class sessions
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
  • Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam

Required Online Course:

  • Prior to the in-class date, all Water Safety Instructor candidates must complete an online course through the Red Cross Learning Center.
  • Information on completing the online course will be emailed to Water Safety Instructor candidates upon registering for a class.

Course Description:

The purpose of the American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches Blended Learning course is to teach those involved in competitive swimming, including coaches, officials, athletic trainers, and aquatic exercise trainers, how to help:

  • Maintain a comfortable and safe environment for swimmers
  • Prevent accidents and emergencies
  • Respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land.

The course fees are outlined below.

The StarGuard Elite Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to prepare StarGuard Elite Instructors to provide a quality education program for lifeguards, using experiential activities based upon adult learning principles, and an emphasis on understanding and utilizing effective facilitation skills.  

The Instructor Development process includes an online self-study course and a face-to-face course conducted by SGE Faculty.  Instructor candidates will review proper rescue techniques that can be used in a variety of aquatic settings and the most effective ways to educate new and experienced aquatic rescue personnel.

The StarGuard Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to train new StarGuard Instructor candidates, cross-over existing lifeguard instructors from another agency, reauthorize StarGuard Instructors, and upgrade Instructor status.  

Instructor Candidates are expected to have exceptional current content knowledge, skill mastery, the ability to follow written and verbal directions, and demonstrate the ability to lead and motivate in a professional manner.

 

Lifeguard Certification Prerequisites: 

  • 15 years or older to participate 
  • Participants need the personal email address for online training
  • Online training must be completed before the start of training
  • 2-day in-person course - all days must be attended
  • Classroom & pool setting - dress accordingly
  • A Hip Pack, Whistle, & BigEasy CPR Mask (NO TRIANGLE MASKS) are required to attend the course.

Swim Prerequisite:

  • Swim 50 yards without stopping
  • Swim 50 yards with a rescue tube across the chest
  • Tread water for 1 minute without the use of hands
  • Retrieve 10-pound object from the bottom of the pool

 

Certification will be awarded on the last day of class and are contingent upon the candidate's successful completion of the written and practical exam. Valid for 1 year. 
 

Course Description

StarGuard's Renewal and Crossover requires participants to complete an online, blended learning course and a one (1) day eight (8) hour water skill course. 

This Lifeguard Certification Course is for individuals who are currently StarGuard Lifeguard certified OR are certified in a recognized program other than StarGuard (American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates or NASCO), and have attended in-service in the 3 months leading up to the course. The focus during training is on competency assessment, methods and approaches that are specific to StarGuard, and facility-specific response methods.

Our courses are designed and taught by industry-leading professionals who are motivated to help prepare you for the many incidents that can arise. 

Lifeguard Certification Prerequisites: 

  • 15 years or older to participate 
  • Participants need the personal email address for online training
  • Online training must be completed before the start of training
  • 1-day in-person course - all days must be attended
  • You must bring an electronic copy of the Starguard 6th Edition Text Book
  • Classroom & pool setting - dress accordingly
  • A Hip Pack, Whistle, & BigEasy style CPR Mask are required to attend the course. 

If you do not have a circle aquatic CPR Mask on the day of the course, you will be charged $20.00. If you do not have a HIp Pack, or Whistle on the day of the course,  you will be charged $30 for a circle aquatic CPR mask, Hip Pack, and Whistle.
